The large bodhisattva head is broken at the top and back. The crown is now missing. It appears likely to be from the main altar of the Middle Cave at the Northern Xiangthanshan cave site. There are two tall bodhisattvas standing at the front of the altar in the central pillar, one at either side. The figure standing at the Buddha's right side has earrings similar to the one that remains on the left ear of the bodhisattva head. It would appear therefore that this head is from the bodhisattva on the Buddha's left that is missing it's original head and now has been fitted with a replacement. |
