This monk's head is that of a youthful disciple of the Buddha, probably Ananda. The Buddha is frequently shown with two monk-like figures with shaven heads, one young and the other old. The older figure is Mahakasyapa, while the younger one is Ananda. Together they represent the Buddha's initial group of disciples who renounced worldly life to follow his teachings. This head is probably from the main altar of the Middle Cave at the Northern Xiangtangshan site, the figure from which it is likely to have been taken still stands at the right side of the Buddha with hands held with palms together in anjalimudra in front of the chest. |
