This sculpture is one of four carved stone relief monsters or demons from the North Cave in the Freer/Sackler Gallery. Like others of this group, it kneels with shoulders hunched. originally bearing the weight of the columns with lotus pedestals from the sixteen stupas on the walls of the North Cave.
Photos of the piece before and afer restoration show that it had been broken in several pieces when removed from the cave and is quite extensively repaired. Zhang and Sun publish the before and after photos as two different sculptures.
The piece is one of a pair of kneeling monster figures (see also 1977.9) transferred from the von der Heydt Collection to the Museum of Natural History before being accessioned into the Freer Gallery collection.
Condition report: fragile. |
