Mizuno Seiichi, Chugoku no chokoku, (Tokyo: Nihon Keizai, 1960), pl. 69.
The bodhisattva sits with legs folded in lotus position. He wears an elaborate crown with triangular and circular elements around the base and lotus flowers at the top. A large halo attached to the back of the head has a central lotus blossom and an outer band of lotus scrolls. The hands are broken off.
A very similar seated bodhisattva in the San Diego Museum of Art has its hands still preserved, the right hand raised in abhayamudra and the left with fingers pointing downward in varadamudra.
This sculpture, a similar bodhisattva in the San Diego Museum, and a seated Buddha in the Victoria and Albert Museum are closely related in design and ornament to carvings in the North and Middle Caves at Northern Xiangtangshan.
Siren had assigned this sculpture to around the 12th century, while Mizuno believed it to be from the Sui period or ca. 600. |
