The ocarina player is one of the heavenly musicians that originally sat at the base of the South caves altars. Its position can be seen on the north wall of the cave between the kneeling monk now in Osaka and the paixiao player at the left side of the central incense burner. The figure holds a small instrument up to his lips the legs are folded with one knee up and one down. The present position of the legs the back, is reassembled and seems rather awkward. The photo published in 1937 shows only the torso of this figure.
